Primitive St Patricks Day Irish Claddagh Make-do Pattern

Primitive St Patricks Day Irish Claddagh Make-do Pattern

Product Information

This is a great primitive pattern for lovers of St. Patrick's Day and all things Irish. The Irish Claddagh has been a wonderful part of Irish tradition and lore. Make this a part of your prim home and be a part of "in love and friendship- let us reign."

The Claddagh story. The are many stories about the Irish Claddagh.

One story begins in the Irish town of Claddagh, near Galway, where the ring is said to have originated. It is said that in the "early times" the symbol was used by the Kings of Claddagh who were known as the "Fishing Kings of Claddagh." The meaning of the symbol was "in love and friendship, let us reign."

Later a man from Galway, named Richard Joyce, was captured by Algerian Corsicans who sold him into slavery to a Moorish goldsmith. In 1689, he was released from captivity on the demand from King William III. He returned to Galway and set up a shop in Claddagh. He is attributed with creating the first Claddagh ring.

In the  Claddagh the hand symbolizes friendship, the crown is loyalty and the heart is love.

Today when the ring is worn on the right hand and turned outward it signifies that the woman is free. When the ring is worn on the right hand and pointed inward, it means that the woman is spoken for and when worn on the left hand, it means the woman is happily married.

It is said the the Claddagh ring is the only ring made in Ireland to be worn by Queen Victoria.

The rings are precious heirlooms and passed down from mother to daughter through the generations.

This is my interpretation of the beautiful Irish tradition. Thanks and enjoy Irish lore and St Patrick's Day year round.
